Preference center setup w/out subscription groups?
Hi all -
Sorry if this has been asked previously but couldn't find anything directly related in recent posts. We're setting up our initial preference center and I'm trying to determine the best way to do it.
Goal: use the 'out of the box' preference center where a user will confirm they want to unsubscribe from email (NOT a 1-click unsub from the email itself). But, we only have 1 email category for now so we'd like the unsub action to map to the global opt-in flags (not subscription groups).
Is this possible? It looks like the preference center requires at lease one subscription group to be created/used, which would mean we'd need to reference that subscription group preference in EVERY audience/filter/canvas that we create, right? Versus being able to rely on a global opt-in flag from the back end?
Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hi lbrine ! You are spot on with all your questions:
- Yes, you'd need to create at least 1 Sub Group before using the Preference Center
- Yes, you'd have to include the Subscription Group filter for all Campaigns/Canvases moving forward...
- But we think it's worth it to avoid the bot-clicks leading to mass unsubscribes.
Please let us know if you have any questions! We plan to share a helpful resource shortly.

Thanks for the reply. That's exactly why we don't want to use the 1-click unsub (accidental + bot clicks). Do many/any customers actually that custom pref center but with only 1 sub group?
The other approach we've been discussing (and recommended by our onboarding team) is using the pref center API where the HTML would need to be passed in the API call from our side to Braze; definitely clunky/not ideal but a better user experience than a preference center with several radio buttons/options but for only 1 email category.- AllanHeoFNMVisionary
lbrineJust seeing this! Apologies for the late reply!
I HAVE seen customers use a pref center with just 1 sub group. All of them were experiencing the exct same issue as you and needed a solution to use the Email Preference Center without digging deep into their Sub Group strategy.
As long as you're avoiding the one-click unsub link, that should solve our issue. So yes, if that means a custom HTML page where the user still needs to click to unsub, but is faced with a better UI, that would work also!

It can be argued that a 1-click unsub is required (including by gmail earlier this year), as a result of that, you should have the 1-click header option enabled already.
You can create your own unsub page, alternately, can setup a user attribute and set that attribute each time a user is added / removed from a subscription group (if that is what you want to use).
For the targeting, you can setup an audience which uses the subscription group and use that in your canvas or campaign (no real difference between that and using a group though).
