Accessing a recent event with Liquid in a scheduled message?
I know that I can access the event properties with Liquid if I use the event to trigger the message. But is it possible to get the most recent event by name, and then use the properties of the event...

I don't think this is possible unless they are part of the event trigger as you've mentioned. In saying that, trying to jog my memory, I felt like this was a feature that was coming at some point. I would do some tests yourself to see if you can grab them yet.
